My great great grandfather was William Gordon 1784 - 1838 he was a partner in the firm Aberdein & Gordon flax spinners in Montrose and Arbroath. My great grandfather was his fourth son Alexander 1823 - 1911 also a flax spinner in Arbroath. Alexander bought the Ashludie estate in Monifieth and built the existing house in 1864, he was elected deputy lieutenant of Forfarshire in 1895. I am specifically interested in discovering more about flax spinning in Montrose and Arbroath. I am also interested in brothers Robert and James Dickson born 1782 and 1784 in Montrose, they later established themselves in Gothenburg where they raised families and became wealthy and influential. Low 1943. I just looked in it for you and there was an article about your family's flax mill on page 8 and 9. It states that "Another partner was William Gordon, Master of the Hospital in 1827 and Town Treasurer in 1833-35. He passed away on 23rd April 1838 and lived in that house on the south-east corner of John Street." I could scan these two pages for you and send them if you wish, or you could probably purchase a copy of the book for yourself. It seems a little unlikely, though not impossible, that he would have been a mason. Do you have any other information, dates, etc. to go on? > > Dave
